The “Guy Fawkes” mask is a depiction of the most famous member of the Gunpowder Plot to blow up The House of Lords in London on November 5, 1605. It was made famous by the movie V For Vendetta in which the protagonist, V, wore it throughout the entire film. The 2005 movie was based on the comic book by the same name created by writer Alan Moore and illustrator David Lloyd, published by Vertigo Comics, a subsidiary of DC Comics. After the movie, David Lloyd’s mask began to appear in Internet forums and was adopted by the online “hactivist” group Anonymous.
David Lloyd stated; “The Guy Fawkes mask has now become a common brand and a convenient placard to use in protest against tyranny – and I’m happy with people using it, it seems quite unique, an icon of popular culture being used this way.” The Character V, in the movie, attempts to ignite a revolution and succeeds in the end only to sacrifice himself As his last act of revolution is taking place, Inspector Finch asks Evie, “Who was he?” to which she replies, “He was Edmond Dantés... and he was my father. And my mother... my brother... my friend. He was you... and me. He was all of us. “
If we look close enough, we can all see ourselves in the mask.
